“The Magic Position” is a miscellaneous album. It’s hard to get a handle on, but it’s well-organised. It sounds calm, but somehow it has much ado about nothing. Patrick’s song writing is eccentric and innovative. Just like Saint-Saëns, Patrick succeeded to violate tradition in a good way, thanks to his grounding in classical music, which prevents this album from falling apart. Also, his words are poetic. Lyrics may lead you to an imaginary world.

Oh, yes. Listening to this album is like seeing a play at a theatre.
Curtains up in the splendour of “Overture”...Applause.
Now, Act I Scene I, Patrick dancing to Village People’s big hit, “YMCA”. Scene II, Patrick playing a computer game.
Act II Scene I, the evening scene, a nostalgia stirs in you. Scene II, modest, just a joint. Scene III, Patrick performing a medieval lyric poet.
Act III Scene I, a folklore in a mysterious village. Scene II, a sight in a film. Scene III, a fairly tale played by Dr WHO.
Act IV Scene I, a picture of a modern pop culture. Scene II, Patrick playing at Blue Note. Scene III, the last scene is “Sound Of Music”.
Then, curtains down in the solemnity of “Finale”...Applause, applause.

The pity is that there’s no highlight in this play. Nothing can make this play exceptional. Nothing in this play makes you overwhelmed. Patrick is unique but not charismatic enough to move many people’s hearts. His “me-ism” comes to the front, so his words and melodies fail to tug at listeners’ heartstrings.

Anyway, Patrick is a naughty but lovable guy. He is a merry wanderer of the night, like Puck in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Just after the last song, “Finale”, listen carefully, people! And then, you’ll hear Patrick’s voice...
“If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumber’d here,
......Else the Patrick a liar call:
So, good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Wolf shall restore amends. [Exit.]
