In these chilly and miserable winter days no one wants to listen to the depressing music which only makes things worse. It depends on the person though, what I am currently listening to is Eliot Smith, My Bloody Valentine and even Nick Drake... well I tried hard to cheer myself up by playing the likes of The Go! Team, CSS and stuff like that but end up tuning something makes me depress more after all. The thing is Winter will last till the end of next April (roughly estimated from my experience) and there is only one way to avoid this boring season. I therefore headed for North London to see strangely funny and cheerful three-piece-band called Bonde Do Role from the other side of the earth Brazil.
Last August at getloaded, I saw them live for the first time and their frenetic and exciting performance was quite worth watching. Almost three months later, I was too busy to catch up with their new material if there was any nor to check out how they were doing in recent music scene. Although they are often likened to CSS, both are musically different. Bonde's sound is much more influenced by 80's cheesy rock anthems such as Europe and funk and disco tunes around that era. Two vocalists Marina and Pedro are not quite singing songs. It's rather rap music with unique samplings on the turntable. Impressive enough, they are naturally used to getting audience involved with their performance. How many people got on stage and danced with them so far? Where is the security guard? No one seem to care and this is like a carnival for people who like to have fun and enjoy themselves in a slap stick situation.
Musically, Bonde's style is nothing new or different. Their experimenting can be considered to be a good effort but it is just like a distorted jigsaw puzzle with misplaced pieces. The idea itself is unique, and we can see their to-have-fun attitude remarkably. At least they know how to make people dance on the floor with them some funky tunes and this involvement surely makes a lot of difference in some special occasions such as a festival. The festival time will come as soon as this gloomy winter goes away. Beware of these finest Brazilian until then.
