There are different ways how we are moved by a live performance. Some people might be amazed by the performance itself or people who play or its intimacy which is brought by both performers and audiences and etc... After all the stronger your feeling towards the musicians is the bigger your expectation or disappointment become, I imagine. Tonight, at Shepherd's Bush Empire, I was really impressed by the fact that how grateful The Charlatans are as they were supported by a number of their royal fans for such a long time since the Brit-Pop period.
Of course their performance itself was almost as perfect as their audio CDs and proved their stability as a band by the fact that they have been playing for twenty years. The Les paul guitar sounds roughly but distinctively strong and the hammond organ leads the verses with its psychedelic melodies. This is the sound called Northern Soul and a lot of bands have had their high time with this sounds such as The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Primal Scream. This rock'n roll with quite raid-back beats which make stoned people dance changed British music history significantly.
Thanks to this charming frontman Tim Burgess whose voices remind me of Ian Brown in The Stone Roses Era, the whole sound of the Charlatans still stand out today. Tim is one of the most attractive singers in British bands and he has got the sort of charisma from singers point of view but more importantly, I have to emphasise that they are the band who still attract such royal fans who sang along almost every single lyric of the songs with the band and gave them a warm welcome because THEY NEVER CHANGE!!!
The Charlatans is still the Charlatans.Their music is strongly influenced by blues and soul combining with rock'n'roll style and this is reminiscent of the days of Brit-Pop frenzy. Yet, musically they have little impact compare to The Stone Roses nor The Verve, this understated attitudes even highlight their well structured pop songs and they have got distinctive tunes which convince us that this is the sound of the Charlatans by Radio air play. They will keep going now matter how drastic the British music scene changes as long as there are people who love the Charlatans and this is the ultimate relationship between artists and music lovers, ideally.
